Additional Information

Wite-out, is just one popular brand name for correction fluid, is a white liquid applied to paper to cover errors. Most brands of correction fluid are composed of a mixture of water, titanium dioxide, latex, soap, resins and preservatives, however, some do contain other chemicals. Wite-out looks and smells like paint, and children may be curious about using it.  Most ingestions in children are minimal; the bottle size is small and they usually just paint it on their tongue or skin. Some children may think it has a bad taste and the liquid may cause gagging and an upset stomach.

If you notice that your child has ingested wite-out or got some on the skin, do not panic. Take the product away from the child and wipe their mouth out with a soft wet cloth. You may give them some water to drink to get the taste out of their mouth. Do not try to induce vomiting. Also, wash off the exposed skin with soap and water.

After you have removed your child from the situation, immediately call the Missouri Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222.  Not all correction fluid products are water based and may contain a chemical that may cause more symptoms.  Treatment recommendations are often determined by the amount ingested and the exact product. The poison center is open all day, every day for poisoning emergencies and questions and our team of medical professionals will help to walk you through the next steps.
