Additional Information

What is pennyroyal oil, and is it safe?

Pennyroyal oil is a very concentrated essential oil made from the leaves of the pennyroyal plant, which belongs to the mint family. People have used this plant in folklore medicine for centuries. As an insect repellent and to cause abortion. However, oftentimes folklore remedies, such as in the case of this substance, do not work as intended and end up causing serious side effects and death.

This oil contains a chemical called pulegone which is highly toxic to the liver. If swallowed, it can cause symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. It can also harm the liver and kidneys, causing bleeding, seizures, coma, and death.

On the internet, the common brands of 100% pure pennyroyal essential oil are Bianca Rosa, Fabulous Fannie, Plant Guru, and Now Foods. The companies’ instructions for use state that the oil is for EXTERNAL USE ONLY. These products instruct buyers to use the oil in small amounts. Just a few drops in bath water or on the skin as a massage oil. Yet, application to the skin may cause a rash, redness, or itching. People also use this oil for aromatherapy.

Is pennyroyal oil toxic?  What happens if you drink it?
