Quick Facts about baby wipes:

If you have a baby or young children in your home, you know that they may put anything in their mouth. Baby wipes are a staple in the homes of parents with young children. These products are only minimally toxic, but they can be a choking hazard if swallowed.

Water is the main ingredient in baby wipes. They also contain mild detergents, similar to those found in baby shampoos. Some brands of baby wipes may contain moisturizers, fragrances, or preservatives. These chemicals are not harmful in small amounts, but may cause an upset stomach if your child ingests them.

If you notice that your child is chewing on a baby wipe, it is important not to panic. Most children will react to the taste, and may cough or gag. Take the baby wipe away from the child and wipe their mouth out with a soft wet cloth. You may give them some water to drink to get the taste out of their mouth. Do not try to induce vomiting.

If a small child stuffs the whole baby wipe in their mouth it could make them gag or choke. If your child is choking on a baby wipe, dial 911 right away for help!

After you have removed your child from the situation, immediately  call the Missouri Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222. Treatment recommendations are often determined by the amount ingested. The poison center is open all day, every day for poisoning emergencies and questions and our team of medical professionals will help to walk you through the next steps.
